Individual. Versatile. Fun
Mosaics created with stained glass, provide realistic possibilities unattainable with traditional leading technique. This design application has virtually no limits except one’s imagination. Mosaic art glass has been around and admired for over 5000 years. The process involves embedding glass, jewels and any other found object that deems itself appropriate for the piece.
Ancient mosaic designs were mostly made of Tesserae, small squares of glass or ceramic usually in size from 1/2″ to 3/4″ square. These are mesmerizing, as the colors and textures are arranged to flow seamlessly. Most glass artists see ourselves in a mosaic-art renaissance as glass art tends to move in that direction.
For me its one of the most relaxing art forms I work with. As irregularity is a critical guideline and most of the time that unique irregularity produces maximum success, endless possibilities can be attained with wall mounted mosaics with no light transmission to bath windows, cabinet doors, baptismal scenes, etc… with maximum light transmission..
Mosaics offer an age old alternative to the standard leaded glass technique. This photo depicts the stained glass mosaic technique of laminating to clear plate, numerous pieces of stained glass of various textures and colors resulting in a realistic landscape scene.
A really cool feature in this window is the waterfall made from broken tempered glass that was molded and epoxied into place. As sunlight comes in the window the small irregular shaped tempered glass pieces in the waterfall glisten as if it were running water. Adding small rocks and pebbles to the top and base of the waterfall further added to the dimension. This window is the perfect compliment for the spa retreat it was created for.
